As the days shorten and high summer warmth gives way to crisp air and cooling nights, the wildlife of the Lake Tahoe basin begins its seasonal transition. For those of us trackers, adventurers, and nature learners, this “shoulder” season offers an exceptional window. One of the most noticeable changes is in the behavior of the region’s black bears. During this time, they enter hyperphagia, a stage of near constant eating as they prepare for winter. Bears can consume thousands of calories a day, foraging for nuts, seeds, berries, and roots to build the fat reserves they need to hibernate.
